Gaya Pind Daan Travel Guide: Rituals, Routes & Bodh Gaya
Gaya, located in the state of Bihar, is the most sacred destination in Hinduism for performing Pind Daan (rituals for the salvation of departed ancestors). Every year, thousands of families travel from Varanasi to Gaya, a journey of approximately 250 kilometers.
1. Vishnupad Temple & Falgu River
The epicenter of the Pind Daan rituals is the Vishnupad Temple, located on the banks of the Falgu River. The temple houses a 40-centimeter-long footprint believed to be of Lord Vishnu, imprinted on solid basalt rock.
Devotees perform the rites on the banks of the Falgu River or under the sacred Akshayavat (immortal banyan tree), guided by local priests (Pandas).
2. Pitru Paksha Mela
While Pind Daan can be performed throughout the year, the 15-day period of Pitru Paksha (usually in September/October) is considered highly auspicious. During this time, Gaya hosts a massive Mela. If you are traveling during Pitru Paksha, you MUST pre-book your Varanasi to Gaya taxi well in advance, as local transport demand exceeds supply by 500%.
3. Bodh Gaya: The Buddhist Circuit
Just 15 kilometers from Gaya lies Bodh Gaya, where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. Most families booking our Gaya tour package include a visit to the magnificent Mahabodhi Temple before returning to Varanasi.
4. Route & Taxi Fare from Varanasi
- Distance: 250 km (One-way)
- Travel Time: 5.5 to 6.5 hours via NH19.
- Vehicle Choice: Because this is a long highway journey spanning two states (UP to Bihar), booking a comfortable SUV like the Innova Crysta is strongly recommended to avoid back pain.
