Banarasi Saree Shopping Guide: Identifying Authentic Handloom Silk
A trip to Kashi is never complete without purchasing an authentic Banarasi Saree. Woven with pure silk and intricate zari (gold or silver brocade), these sarees are treasured heirlooms. However, the streets of Varanasi are also filled with imitation power-loom sarees being sold as handloom originals to unsuspecting tourists. Here is your ultimate guide to buying authentic silk in Varanasi without getting scammed.
1. Handloom vs. Power-Loom
The difference between a handloom and a power-loom saree lies in the weaving process and the quality of the thread.
- Handloom (Authentic): Woven manually by master weavers. It takes 15 to 30 days to complete a single saree. They are softer, drape beautifully, and are expensive (starting around ₹8,000 - ₹15,000 for pure silk).
- Power-Loom (Machine Made): Mass-produced on machines in a day. They often use synthetic mix threads (art silk). They are much cheaper (₹2,000 - ₹5,000) and stiffer. There is nothing wrong with buying power-loom, as long as you are not paying handloom prices for it!
2. How to Identify a Genuine Banarasi Saree
- The Reverse Check: Flip the saree. A genuine handloom Banarasi will have a heavy web of threads on the reverse side (the floats), whereas a power-loom saree will often be completely smooth or have perfectly clipped threads.
- The Silk Mark: Always ask for the Silk Mark tag, a certification provided by the Silk Board of India guaranteeing the purity of the silk.
- The Burn Test: If you pull a loose thread and burn it, pure silk smells like burnt hair and turns into ash. Synthetic silk melts like plastic. (Shopkeepers obviously won't let you burn a new saree, but you can ask them for a thread from the border).
3. Beware of the "Factory Tour" Scam
WARNING: If an auto-rickshaw driver or local guide offers to take you to a "secret weaver's factory" or a "government emporium with massive discounts," refuse immediately. These are almost always commission traps where prices are inflated by 50% to pay the driver's cut.
When you book a Big Cab for local sightseeing, our company policy strictly forbids our drivers from pushing you into specific commission shops. You have total freedom to shop wherever you want.
4. Best Areas for Saree Shopping
- Chowk & Godowlia: The traditional commercial heart of the city. Look for old, established showrooms.
- Peeli Kothi: The actual weaver's colony. If you have a trusted local contact, this is where the wholesale trading happens.
